Best Way to Avoid Razor Burn

Razor burn is one of the most common and annoying problems that appear when shaving.  The irritation and redness appears as a result of the friction of the razor as it passes over the texture of your skin. It is believed that half of men have to deal with razor bumps, so we need to know what to do about it!

The first step to avoid razor bumps should be improving your shaving technique and use better products aimed at preparing your skin against damage.  Of course, keeping a razor for men in good shape is also equally important, because imperfections in the blade will cause more irritation.

To start, get accustomed at using a facial scrub for your skin type before each shaving session. A facial scrub will remove dirt and dead skin cells on the outer layers of the skin.  Next, you need to soften your beard by applying a good quality shaving cream; to correctly do this, apply the shaving cream massaging it on your face and neck area with your fingers ore a brush for about a minute.  This will allow the shaving cream to work as intended.

Using a shaving brush is always a better option since it will help lift your beard and will provide mild exfoliation. As for razor, we have concluded that the best razor is the safety razor, but if you want to use modern options, buy a triple-blade razor with a lubricating strip as it will give you a close shave in less passes (which in turn means less irritation!).

Another good thing to consider is the direction in which you pass the razor.  While many men shave against the grain to get a close shave, this is not a recommended practice as it will leave you with redness and irritation.

When you finish shaving, rinse your face using cool water and use a non-alcohol after-shave balm that will soothe the skin and close the pores to avoid further irritation.

Taking Care of Your Shaving Razor

Getting your hands on the best razor for men you can find is only one thing, next you need to take proper care of it.  By taking good care of your razor you are not only extending its life, but you are also ensuring you get the best results possible without hurting your skin. Here are some tips that will help you keep your razor in good shape.
  • Replace your blades constantly.  It doesn’t matter which type of razor we are talking about here (unless it is a straight edge razor, which requires sharpening), you need to replace your blades regularly.  Though opinions vary, we believe that a blade shouldn’t be used for more than 2 weeks.  Just observe if the razor isn’t bringing the same results as when you started.
  • Pat your razor dry with a towel after each use.  Water on the blade will wear it out quicker and may even develop rust, something that you don’t need on your face! Just pat it dry quickly and finish.  This simple step can save you a lot of skin problems!
  • As an extra step, I use a shaving foam called Eco-Armour.  What’s great about this shaving foam is that you can put a little on the blade and it keeps it protected and sharp for more time.  If you can find these products in your area, they are worth trying out, but that would be a good material for another post…
Remember, a well-cared baled will give you the best shaving results!
